Bergenia pacumbis (syn. Bergenia ligulata), commonly known as Pashanbheda in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine for a variety of urinary and metabolic conditions, including gout. The traditional rationale for its use in gout stems from its reputed ability to dissolve stones ("pashan" = stone, "bheda" = breaker) and its diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects, which are believed to help eliminate uric acid and reduce inflammation in joints.

Scientific studies on Bergenia pacumbis specifically for gout are limited. Some preclinical research has shown that extracts of the plant possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and a few in vitro and animal studies suggest uric acid-lowering activity. However, direct clinical evidence in humans for the treatment of gout is lacking.

The use of Bergenia pacumbis for gout, therefore, is primarily justified by traditional Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical reports rather than robust scientific validation. While some pharmacological properties of the plant could theoretically benefit gout sufferers, the evidence base remains preliminary, and more rigorous clinical studies are required to confirm efficacy and safety for this indication.
