Evidence supporting the use of: European White Birch
For the health condition: Gout
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
European White Birch (Betula pendula) has been traditionally used in European folk medicine for its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help in the management of gout. In historical practice, birch leaves and extracts were administered to promote the excretion of uric acid and reduce swelling in joints affected by gout. The rationale stems from observations of increased urine output and mild anti-inflammatory effects attributed to the plant’s flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. However, scientific research validating these effects specifically in gout is minimal. There are a few in vitro and animal studies that show birch extracts may have anti-inflammatory and diuretic actions, but robust clinical trials in humans for gout are lacking. Modern phytotherapy references sometimes list birch as an adjunct for urinary tract and rheumatic conditions, but not as a primary or proven treatment for gout. In summary, the use of European White Birch for gout is largely based on traditional knowledge and historical texts rather than strong scientific evidence.
