Horse Gram (Macrotyloma uniflorum) has been traditionally used in various systems of Indian medicine, including Ayurveda and Siddha, for the management of gout and related conditions characterized by joint pain and inflammation. Ancient texts and folk remedies recommend Horse Gram as a dietary intervention for "Vata" disorders and as a "uric acid-lowering" food, based on the observation that its consumption may promote diuresis (increased urine output) and help remove toxins from the body. The traditional rationale is that Horse Gram's astringent and warming properties help counteract the buildup of "ama" (toxins) and uric acid in the joints.

However, scientific evidence supporting its use for gout specifically is limited. A few modern studies have documented Horse Gram's diuretic effects and its high content of polyphenols and antioxidants, which may contribute to reduced oxidative stress and inflammation. There is also some evidence that Horse Gram may help in lowering serum uric acid levels in animal models, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. Thus, while Horse Gram is widely used in traditional medicine for gout, the scientific validation for its effectiveness in treating or supporting gout is currently modest and largely based on traditional knowledge with preliminary experimental support.
