Evidence supporting the use of: Korean Angelica
For the health condition: Gout
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Korean Angelica (Angelica gigas) has a history of use in traditional Korean and East Asian medicine, primarily for ailments such as blood circulation issues, menstrual disorders, and as a general tonic. Its application to gout is primarily based on this traditional use, with the plant sometimes included in herbal formulas meant to "clear heat" and "dispel wind-dampness"—concepts in traditional medicine that align loosely with symptoms like joint pain and inflammation. However, modern scientific studies directly evaluating Korean Angelica's efficacy for gout are lacking. There are some in vitro and animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of compounds found in Angelica gigas, such as decursin and decursinol angelate, but these studies do not specifically address gout or uric acid metabolism. No clinical trials in humans have evaluated Korean Angelica for the treatment or prevention of gout. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition, there is currently little scientific evidence to validate its effectiveness for gout specifically.
