Evidence supporting the use of: Patrinia
For the health condition: Gout
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Patrinia, a genus of plants used in traditional East Asian medicine, is primarily justified in the management of gout by traditional use rather than strong scientific evidence. Texts from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) mention Patrinia (commonly Patrinia scabiosaefolia or Patrinia villosa) as a component in herbal formulas for clearing heat and resolving toxins, functions that are sometimes interpreted as relevant for inflammatory conditions such as gout. However, the direct use of Patrinia specifically for gout is not a consistent or prominent feature in classical TCM literature compared to other herbs like Tripterygium wilfordii or Smilax glabra. There are very few, if any, well-designed clinical trials or pharmacological studies exploring Patrinia's efficacy in lowering uric acid or treating acute gout attacks. Some in vitro studies have shown Patrinia extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically contribute to ameliorating gout symptoms, but these effects have not been rigorously validated in the context of clinical gout. Thus, while Patrinia may occasionally be included in polyherbal formulations for inflammatory conditions in traditional practice, its use for gout is best described as minor, traditional, and weakly substantiated by current scientific research.
