Acerola (Malpighia emarginata), also known as Barbados cherry, is a fruit exceptionally rich in vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Scientific evidence supports the role of vitamin C in maintaining healthy gums and preventing periodontal diseases. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis, which is a critical component of gum tissue structure and repair. Deficiency in vitamin C leads to scurvy, a disease characterized by swollen, bleeding gums and tooth loss. While scurvy is rare today, suboptimal vitamin C intake has been associated with an increased risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Several observational studies have noted that individuals with higher vitamin C intake have better periodontal health. Experimental studies, though limited, show that vitamin C supplementation can reduce gum bleeding and inflammation in vitamin C-deficient individuals. Acerola, due to its high vitamin C content, is sometimes used in supplements aimed at supporting gum health.

However, it is important to note that much of the evidence is extrapolated from vitamin C research in general, rather than from studies specifically using acerola fruit. There is a lack of large, high-quality clinical trials specifically investigating acerola's effect on gum health. Nevertheless, given its dense vitamin C content, scientific rationale supports its inclusion as a supportive ingredient for gum health, mainly as a natural source of vitamin C.
