Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Achyranthes bidentata, known as "Niu Xi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use, primarily for its purported benefits on the musculoskeletal system, circulation, and as an anti-inflammatory. In the context of oral health and the gums, its use is primarily justified by traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. TCM texts sometimes mention Niu Xi as a component in herbal formulas aimed at reducing swelling, promoting circulation, and resolving "toxins," which may be interpreted as addressing inflammation or infections, including those relevant to oral health. These traditional uses are the basis for its inclusion in some herbal mouthwashes or tooth powders in East Asian countries.

However, while there is limited in vitro research indicating anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of Achyranthes bidentata extracts, direct studies on its efficacy in supporting gum (periodontal) health in humans are lacking. There are no high-quality clinical trials that specifically examine its effects on conditions like gingivitis or periodontitis. Thus, the evidence supporting its use for gum health is largely traditional, with a low (2 out of 5) evidence rating due to the absence of targeted scientific validation.
