Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Amber resin has a long history of traditional use for oral health, particularly in Eastern European and Baltic folk medicine. It has been used in various forms—such as powders, tinctures, or direct application—to soothe gums, reduce inflammation, and address oral discomfort. The rationale in traditional practice is partly due to the resin’s mildly antimicrobial properties and its content of succinic acid, which is believed to support healing and reduce irritation. However, scientific validation of these effects is minimal. There are only a few in vitro studies demonstrating that amber or succinic acid may have limited antibacterial or anti-inflammatory potential, but these findings are not specific to gum health and have not been proven effective in human clinical trials for oral or periodontal health. Therefore, while the use of amber resin for supporting gum health is rooted in tradition, its efficacy is not substantiated by high-quality scientific evidence, and its traditional use remains largely anecdotal.
