Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aucubin is an iridoid glycoside found in various medicinal plants, most notably in Plantago species (such as Plantago major and Plantago lanceolata). Its use for supporting oral and gum health is primarily based on traditional herbal medicine practices, especially in Europe and parts of Asia, where preparations of Plantago have been applied topically or used as mouth rinses to soothe inflamed gums and minor oral wounds. Folk remedies have often cited the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of Plantago extracts as beneficial for oral health. However, direct clinical or scientific studies specifically examining aucubin’s effects on gum health are limited. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that aucubin displays anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing effects, which could theoretically contribute to gum health, but these findings do not directly translate to strong clinical evidence for its use in humans for this specific purpose. As such, while there is a historical basis for using aucubin-containing plants for oral health, the scientific validation remains limited, and more rigorous studies are needed to confirm its efficacy for gum support.
