Bee propolis has been used traditionally for oral health, and recent scientific studies provide some support for its benefits in gum (periodontal) health. Propolis is a resinous mixture produced by bees from plant exudates, and it exhibits antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that propolis can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, which are associated with gingivitis and periodontitis. Clinical trials, though limited in number and scale, suggest that propolis-containing mouthrinses or gels may reduce dental plaque, gingival inflammation, and bleeding when used as an adjunct to standard oral hygiene.
For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2013 in the Journal of Oral Science found that a propolis mouthrinse significantly reduced gingival inflammation compared to placebo. Another study in Phytotherapy Research (2006) reported improved periodontal parameters in subjects using a propolis gel. However, these studies are often small and more large-scale, high-quality research is needed to confirm the findings and establish standardized dosing protocols. Overall, the existing body of evidence supports the adjunctive use of bee propolis for gum health, but it should not replace conventional oral hygiene practices.
