Belleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), known as "Bibhitaki" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine, particularly as a component of the famous herbal formulation Triphala. In Ayurvedic texts, Belleric myrobalan is described as beneficial for oral health, including the gums. It is commonly used in herbal tooth powders and mouth rinses to promote healthy gums and teeth. The rationale is based on its astringent properties, which are believed to strengthen gum tissue and help manage oral ulcers, inflammation, and bleeding gums. Some ethnomedicinal practices involve using the dried fruit or its powder topically on the gums.

Scientific studies on Belleric myrobalan's effects specifically on gum health are limited. However, a few laboratory and animal studies have evaluated the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of Belleric myrobalan extracts, including against oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, which are associated with gum disease. These findings provide some biological plausibility but have not been translated into strong clinical evidence. As such, the support for its use for gum health is primarily traditional, with only modest indirect scientific support.
