Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are a group of plant-derived compounds that have been studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Their use in supporting gum health (periodontal health) has some scientific backing, though the strength of evidence is moderate. Several studies have examined the effects of specific bioflavonoids, such as hesperidin, quercetin, and rutin, on oral tissues. These compounds appear to reduce inflammation, decrease capillary fragility, and may help in the management of bleeding gums and gingivitis. For example, a few clinical trials have shown that supplements containing bioflavonoids, especially when combined with vitamin C, can reduce gum bleeding and improve some signs of periodontal disease. The proposed mechanism involves inhibition of inflammatory mediators and protection of connective tissue. However, while laboratory and animal studies are promising, high-quality human clinical trials are limited and results are not always consistent. Major dental associations do not currently recommend bioflavonoids as a primary treatment for gum disease, but they are sometimes included in oral health supplements. In summary, scientific evidence suggests a possible benefit of bioflavonoids in supporting gum health, but further research is needed to confirm their effectiveness and establish optimal dosing.
