Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are a class of polyphenolic compounds found in various fruits and vegetables. Their use in supporting gum (periodontal) health has some scientific basis. Research suggests that bioflavonoids possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and capillary-strengthening properties, which can contribute to oral health. Several studies indicate that bioflavonoids, particularly when combined with vitamin C, can help reduce gum bleeding, inflammation, and support the integrity of capillaries in the gingival tissues. For instance, rutin and hesperidin—two common bioflavonoids—have demonstrated positive effects on capillary fragility and may assist in reducing symptoms of gingivitis and periodontitis.

Clinical research is still limited and outcomes can vary depending on the specific type of bioflavonoid used, dosage, and study design. Most evidence comes from small-scale studies, in vitro experiments, or combination therapies with vitamin C, rather than large, well-controlled trials focusing on unspecified bioflavonoids alone. Despite these limitations, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory roles of bioflavonoids are well recognized in the scientific community and provide a plausible rationale for their use in supporting gum health. Therefore, while more robust clinical trials are needed for conclusive recommendations, the use of bioflavonoids for gum support is scientifically plausible and moderately supported by current evidence.
