Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Boswellia serrata, also known as Indian frankincense, has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its gum resin contains active constituents called boswellic acids, which are believed to inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes. Although traditionally used for a variety of inflammatory conditions, including those affecting the mouth, the specific use of Boswellia serrata to support gum health primarily arises from its general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Historical records and ethnobotanical sources note its application in treating oral ulcers, gingivitis, and other minor oral ailments.

Despite its traditional use, modern scientific studies directly investigating Boswellia serrata’s effects on gum health are limited. Some small clinical and in vitro studies suggest that Boswellia extracts may reduce inflammation and bacterial load in the oral cavity, potentially benefiting conditions such as gingivitis. However, the number and quality of these studies are insufficient for strong scientific validation. Therefore, while its use for supporting gum health is rooted in tradition and supported by plausible mechanisms, the overall evidence remains modest.
