Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cajeput oil (derived from Melaleuca cajuputi) has a history of use in traditional medicine, especially in Southeast Asia and Australia, for oral health and gum care. Historically, indigenous and local practitioners have used cajeput oil for its purported antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been applied topically (diluted) to the gums to help alleviate discomfort associated with minor gum irritations and to support oral hygiene. The oil shares some constituents (such as 1,8-cineole) with tea tree oil, which has been more extensively studied for oral care, though direct studies on cajeput oil are limited.

Scientific research specifically investigating cajeput oil’s effects on gum health is scarce. Some in vitro studies demonstrate that cajeput oil possesses antimicrobial activity against certain oral pathogens, but these findings have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials or directly linked to improved gum health outcomes. Thus, while there is a longstanding tradition of using cajeput oil for oral care, scientific validation is currently lacking. Anyone considering its use for gum support should exercise caution due to the potential for mucosal irritation and seek guidance from dental or medical professionals.
