Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Canaigre (Rumex hymenosepalus), also known as wild rhubarb or canaigre dock, contains tannins—hence "canaigre tannates"—which have traditionally been used by Native American groups in the southwestern United States. The roots, rich in tannic acid, were used for their astringent properties to address oral and gum issues such as minor inflammations, bleeding gums, and mouth sores. The astringency of tannins is known to help tighten tissues and reduce minor bleeding, which supports their traditional use as a topical agent for gum health. However, there is limited to no direct modern scientific research specifically validating canaigre tannates for the support of gum tissue or treatment of periodontal disease. Most of the support comes from ethnobotanical records and the general understanding of tannins’ astringent and antimicrobial effects. While tannins from other plant sources (like witch hazel or oak bark) have stronger scientific documentation for oral care, specific clinical trials with canaigre are lacking. Therefore, its use for gum support is primarily justified by tradition, with a modest level of evidence based on its chemistry and widespread use of tannins in oral care historically.
