Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Casearia sylvestris has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in South America, for supporting oral health, including the gums. In Brazilian traditional medicine, it is known as "guaçatonga" and is commonly used as an antiseptic mouthwash to treat mouth ulcers, gingivitis, and other oral inflammations. Several ethnobotanical studies document its use by indigenous and rural populations for promoting gum health and treating oral infections. The traditional preparation usually involves decoctions or infusions of the leaves, which are then used as rinses or topical applications.

While there are some preliminary laboratory studies indicating antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Casearia sylvestris extracts, the direct clinical evidence for its efficacy in supporting gum health or treating periodontal disease in humans is limited. Most of the support for its use comes from historical and ethnobotanical records, rather than robust clinical trials. Thus, while the traditional basis for its use to support the gums is well-documented, the scientific validation remains minimal at present.
