Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Citrus sinensis, commonly known as sweet orange, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly for oral health. Traditional practices, especially in some cultures, have utilized orange peel and extracts for maintaining mouth and gum health. These uses are largely attributed to the natural antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the essential oils and flavonoids present in the fruit and its peel. However, the scientific evidence supporting the use of Citrus sinensis specifically for the "Gums" body system is limited. Some in vitro studies suggest that citrus extracts can inhibit the growth of common oral pathogens, and vitamin C (abundant in oranges) is known to play a vital role in collagen synthesis and gum health. However, these findings are not unique to Citrus sinensis, as similar effects are observed with other citrus fruits and sources of vitamin C. There are few, if any, clinical trials directly linking proprietary Citrus sinensis preparations to significant improvements in gum health. Therefore, while traditional use exists and there is a plausible biological mechanism, high-quality scientific validation is lacking, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
