Evidence supporting the use of: Coenzyme Q10
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been investigated for its potential benefits in supporting gum (periodontal) health. Some scientific studies suggest that CoQ10 may play a role in improving periodontal conditions. For example, research has explored both topical and oral administration of CoQ10 in patients with periodontal disease. A few small clinical trials have indicated that topical application of CoQ10 can reduce inflammation and improve healing in the gums, potentially due to its role as an antioxidant and its involvement in cellular energy production. Oral supplementation has also been studied, with some evidence suggesting it might help reduce gum inflammation and improve certain periodontal parameters when used alongside standard dental treatments. However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are limited. Many studies are small, vary in methodology, and sometimes lack rigorous controls, making it challenging to draw firm conclusions. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while there may be some benefit, more well-designed, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm the efficacy of CoQ10 for gum health. Thus, while there is scientific interest and preliminary support for the use of CoQ10 in supporting gum health, the evidence is not robust and does not warrant strong clinical recommendations at this time.
