Evidence supporting the use of: Collagen (unspecified)
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Collagen is a structural protein that is abundant in connective tissues throughout the body, including the gums (gingiva). Scientific interest in collagen supplementation for oral health, particularly gum health, has grown in recent years. The rationale stems from the fact that gum tissue is rich in collagen, and degradation of collagen is a key event in periodontal disease. Some studies and clinical trials have examined whether oral collagen supplements can improve periodontal outcomes, such as reducing gum bleeding or promoting tissue regeneration after dental procedures. Results are mixed, with some small trials indicating modest improvements in gingival health or healing, but the evidence base is limited and not yet robust.
While collagen-containing materials (e.g., collagen membranes) are routinely used in dental surgery to support tissue regeneration, the benefit of systemic (oral) collagen supplementation for healthy individuals or those with mild gum disease is not well established. Most available studies have methodological limitations, including small sample sizes and short durations.
Overall, there is some emerging scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for collagen's supportive role in gum health, but high-quality, large-scale studies are lacking. Thus, the current evidence rating is moderate to low.
