Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Curcuminoids, the active polyphenolic compounds found in turmeric (Curcuma longa), have been studied for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which are relevant to supporting gum (periodontal) health. Scientific research, including randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews, indicates that curcuminoids may benefit oral health by reducing inflammation and microbial load in periodontal tissues. Studies have shown that curcumin-based mouthwashes and gels can decrease gingival bleeding, plaque accumulation, and pocket depth in patients with gingivitis and periodontitis, performing comparably to chlorhexidine in some cases. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines, downregulation of NF-κB signaling, and antimicrobial activity against periodontal pathogens. However, most clinical trials have relatively small sample sizes and short durations. While the evidence is promising and supports curcuminoids as an adjunctive therapy for gum health, more large-scale, long-term studies are needed to establish optimal dosage, formulation, and confirm efficacy. Overall, curcuminoids are scientifically validated to a moderate extent for supporting the gum body system, primarily based on their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects demonstrated in human and laboratory studies.
