Evidence supporting the use of: Flavanoid (mixture)
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Flavonoids are a class of polyphenolic compounds found in various fruits, vegetables, and plant-based foods, and they have been studied for their potential benefits on oral health, including the support of gum (periodontal) health. Scientific research indicates that flavonoids possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, all of which can contribute to gum health. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that certain flavonoids, such as quercetin, catechins, and hesperidin, can inhibit the growth of periodontal pathogens, reduce inflammation, and decrease oxidative stress in the gums. Human studies, though limited, suggest that diets rich in flavonoids or the use of flavonoid-containing mouthwashes may reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding.
For example, a review published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (2015) discussed the positive effects of various plant polyphenols, including flavonoids, on periodontal inflammation and microbial populations. However, while the mechanistic and preclinical evidence is strong, high-quality clinical trials directly demonstrating a significant benefit of flavonoid supplementation (as a mixture) for gum health in humans are relatively sparse. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale and some supporting evidence, more well-designed human studies are needed to conclusively establish efficacy.
