Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Flavonoids are a diverse group of phytonutrients found in many fruits, vegetables, and plant-derived foods. There is growing scientific evidence supporting the use of flavonoids for oral and gum health. Flavonoids, such as quercetin, hesperidin, rutin, and catechins, exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties that may benefit gum tissue. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that flavonoids can inhibit the growth of periodontal pathogens, reduce inflammation in gingival tissues, and protect against oxidative stress, which is implicated in periodontal disease. Some small clinical studies suggest that flavonoid-rich extracts or supplements may reduce gingival bleeding and improve periodontal parameters when used alongside standard dental care. For example, green tea catechins have been shown to reduce markers of gum inflammation in some human trials. However, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to definitively establish their efficacy.

Overall, while the use of flavonoids to support gum health is grounded in plausible biochemical mechanisms and preliminary scientific research, the current evidence base is moderate, meriting a rating of 3. Their use in this context is supported more by emerging science than by longstanding tradition.
