Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Fluorine, most commonly in the form of fluoride, is strongly supported by scientific evidence for its role in supporting the health of gums and teeth. Numerous studies have shown that fluoride helps to prevent dental caries (tooth decay) by enhancing the remineralization of enamel and inhibiting the activity of cariogenic bacteria. While the primary benefit of fluoride is in the prevention of cavities, this effect indirectly supports gum health. Healthy teeth are less prone to infections and conditions that can adversely affect the gums, such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

Fluoride has been added to community water supplies, toothpaste, and mouth rinses based on decades of research showing significant reductions in dental caries rates in populations with fluoridated water. The American Dental Association (ADA), World Health Organization (WHO), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) all endorse the use of fluoride for oral health. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses consistently demonstrate its effectiveness in reducing dental caries and improving overall oral health, which includes maintaining healthy gums.

While fluoride does not directly "treat" gum disease, its role in preventing tooth decay and maintaining oral hygiene creates an environment that is less conducive to the development of gum problems. Thus, the use of fluoride to support the gums body system is strongly validated by scientific evidence.
