Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Frankincense, derived from the resin of Boswellia trees, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, including Ayurvedic and Middle Eastern practices. It has been used for various oral health applications, such as supporting gum health, due to its reputed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Historical texts and anecdotal reports suggest that frankincense was chewed or applied topically to the gums to soothe oral discomfort and reduce swelling or inflammation.

Modern scientific studies on frankincense specifically for gum health are limited, but some in vitro and animal studies indicate that Boswellia extracts can exert anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. These properties theoretically support oral health, including the gums, by reducing inflammation and potentially combatting bacteria associated with gum disease. However, robust clinical trials in humans targeting gum disease outcomes are lacking, so the evidence remains largely traditional and preliminary. As such, frankincense continues to be used in some herbal and alternative oral care products, but its efficacy for supporting gum health is not strongly substantiated by scientific research at this time.
