Evidence supporting the use of: Heliopsis
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Heliopsis, particularly Heliopsis longipes (commonly known as "chilcuague" or "gold root"), has a long history of traditional use among indigenous peoples in Mexico for oral health, especially for supporting gum health. Traditionally, the roots are chewed or used in tinctures to alleviate toothaches, reduce oral inflammation, and maintain healthy gums. This use is primarily based on ethnobotanical reports and traditional medicine practices rather than robust clinical studies.
Phytochemical analyses have identified alkamides (notably affinin) in Heliopsis longipes, which exhibit anesthetic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro and in animal models. These effects are hypothesized to contribute to its traditional oral health uses. However, while laboratory studies suggest potential for reducing oral bacteria and inflammation, there are currently no large-scale, peer-reviewed clinical trials validating its efficacy in human gum health.
In summary, while Heliopsis is widely used in traditional Mexican medicine to support the gums and oral cavity, the evidence remains largely anecdotal and preclinical. Its historical use and some preliminary pharmacological findings provide modest support (evidence level 2) for its role in gum health, but further research is needed for scientific validation.
