Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Indian Kinotree (Pterocarpus marsupium) has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine, particularly Ayurveda, for supporting oral health and treating gum disorders. Traditionally, extracts from the bark and gum-resin known as "kino" have been applied for their astringent properties, believed to help tighten gums, reduce gum bleeding, and promote healing in cases of gingivitis or oral ulcers. The astringency is attributed to the high content of tannins and polyphenolic compounds in the plant, which can constrict tissues and reduce inflammation.

While a number of traditional Ayurvedic formulations and some ethnobotanical records cite Indian Kinotree for oral and gum health, scientific validation is limited. Few in vitro studies suggest antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Pterocarpus marsupium extracts, which could potentially benefit gum health, but well-controlled human clinical trials are lacking. Thus, its use for supporting the gums is primarily justified by tradition rather than robust scientific evidence. Nevertheless, the longstanding historical application and its notable phytochemical profile provide a reasonable basis for its inclusion in traditional oral care remedies.
