Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian Redwood (Biophytum sensitivum) has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine, particularly Ayurveda, where it is known as "Lajalu" or "Chittak." It is often included in formulations aimed at maintaining oral health, including supporting healthy gums. The traditional rationale stems from its purported anti-inflammatory, astringent, and wound-healing properties. While these properties are cited in Ayurvedic texts and some ethnomedicinal surveys, rigorous scientific studies specifically examining Indian Redwood's efficacy for gum health are limited. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Biophytum sensitivum possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, which could theoretically be beneficial in managing gum inflammation and infection. However, these findings have not yet been robustly translated into well-controlled clinical trials involving human subjects with gum disease. As a result, Indian Redwood's use for supporting the gums is primarily justified by traditional use, with some preliminary pharmacological support but lacking high-quality clinical evidence. Anyone considering its use should be aware that its role in oral health remains largely traditional, and more research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this specific purpose.
