Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kigelia africana, commonly known as the sausage tree, has a long history of traditional use in African herbal medicine. Its bark, fruit, and leaves have been used by various communities for a range of ailments, including oral health concerns. In traditional medicine, preparations from Kigelia africana are sometimes applied topically or used as a rinse to address issues such as gum inflammation, mouth ulcers, and infections. The rationale for this use stems from the plant’s reported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which have been observed in some laboratory studies, albeit not specifically targeted at oral pathogens or gum tissue. However, scientific validation for its effectiveness in supporting gum health specifically is limited. While some studies have demonstrated antimicrobial activity of Kigelia africana extracts against various bacteria and fungi, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or direct scientific evidence showing efficacy in preventing or treating gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis) in humans. Most of the support for its use in oral and gum health remains anecdotal or based on traditional practices rather than rigorous, peer-reviewed research. Therefore, while there is a traditional basis for its use in supporting the gums, the overall quality and specificity of evidence is modest, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
