Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) has a history of traditional use in Nordic, Russian, and other Northern European folk medicine for oral health, including gum support. Historically, the berries and sometimes leaves were consumed or used in oral rinses, believed to help maintain healthy gums and prevent oral infections, possibly due to their tartness and antimicrobial properties. However, robust scientific evidence directly supporting lingonberry for gum health is limited. Some in vitro studies suggest lingonberries contain polyphenols and organic acids with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities that could theoretically benefit oral tissues, but well-designed clinical trials are lacking. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional practices rather than modern research. Thus, while lingonberry’s use for gum support is supported by traditional knowledge, the scientific validation for its effectiveness in this context remains weak.
