Neem (Azadirachta indica) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda, for oral health and gum care. Traditionally, neem twigs have been chewed as a natural toothbrush, and neem extracts are incorporated in some toothpastes and mouthwashes in South Asia and beyond.

Scientific studies provide moderate support for neem's role in supporting gum health. Research indicates that neem possesses antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Several in vitro and clinical studies demonstrate that neem extracts can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens associated with gingivitis and periodontitis, including Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Clinical trials have shown that mouthwashes containing neem extract can be as effective as chlorhexidine in reducing plaque and gingival inflammation, with fewer side effects such as staining.

However, the quality of the studies varies, with some limitations in sample size and study design. While results are promising, more large-scale and well-controlled clinical trials are needed to fully validate neem's efficacy and safety in gum care. Nonetheless, the available evidence supports the traditional use of neem for maintaining healthy gums, justifying its inclusion in oral hygiene products.
