Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Nimbidin is a major bioactive compound isolated from the seed oil of Azadirachta indica (commonly known as neem). Its traditional use in dental and oral care, especially for supporting gum health, stems from the broader ethnomedicinal applications of neem in Ayurveda and other traditional systems, where neem twigs have long been used as natural toothbrushes ("chew sticks") to promote oral hygiene and gum health. Scientifically, nimbidin has been shown to possess significant antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that nimbidin and neem extracts can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens associated with gingivitis and periodontitis, reduce plaque formation, and lower inflammatory responses in the gums. For example, research published in journals such as Indian Journal of Dental Research and Phytotherapy Research has reported that neem-based mouthwashes and gels can reduce gum inflammation and improve periodontal indices. However, while nimbidin's antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities are well documented, most clinical studies to date have tested whole neem extracts rather than the isolated compound. Thus, while there is scientific support for neem (and by extension, nimbidin) in gum health, direct high-quality clinical evidence specifically for isolated nimbidin is still emerging. Overall, the evidence base is moderate, justifying a score of 3.
