Punicalagin is a polyphenol compound predominantly found in pomegranate (Punica granatum) and is noted for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Scientific evidence suggests that punicalagin can support gum (periodontal) health by inhibiting the growth of oral pathogens and reducing inflammation associated with periodontal disease. Several in vitro studies have shown that punicalagin exhibits antimicrobial effects against common oral bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans, which are implicated in gum disease and dental caries. Furthermore, some small-scale clinical studies and trials using pomegranate extracts (which contain punicalagin) as mouthwashes or gels have demonstrated a reduction in plaque accumulation, gingival bleeding, and markers of inflammation compared to placebo or standard treatments. However, the majority of available studies use whole pomegranate extracts rather than isolated punicalagin, and the sample sizes are often limited. While the mechanistic basis and preliminary clinical evidence are promising, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to fully establish punicalagin's efficacy for gum health. Currently, its use in oral care products is supported by a growing but still moderate body of scientific evidence.
