Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rubus is a genus that includes various bramble species such as blackberries and raspberries. Traditionally, leaves and roots from certain Rubus species, especially Rubus fruticosus (blackberry), have been used in folk medicine to support oral health, including the gums. Historical European and North American herbal practices often recommended chewing the leaves, making infusions, or using decoctions as mouthwashes for sore gums, mouth ulcers, or minor oral infections. This traditional use was largely based on the astringent properties of tannins found in Rubus spp., which are believed to tighten and tone mucous membranes, potentially reducing inflammation and bleeding.
However, there is limited modern scientific research specifically investigating the efficacy of Rubus spp. for gum health. Some laboratory studies confirm that Rubus leaves contain significant levels of tannins and flavonoids with antimicrobial and astringent activity, which could theoretically benefit oral tissues. Yet, robust clinical trials examining its direct impact on gum disease or gingivitis are lacking. As a result, the support for its use in gum health remains primarily traditional, with minimal scientific validation. Further research is needed to confirm its effects and establish standardized preparations for oral care.
