Evidence supporting the use of: Rugose Rose
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rugose Rose (Rosa rugosa), also known as Japanese rose, has been traditionally used in herbal medicine, especially in East Asia. The fruits (rose hips) are rich in vitamin C and various polyphenols, which are believed to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally, rose hips from various Rosa species have been used to support oral health, including the gums, due to their high vitamin C content. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis and maintenance of healthy gum tissue, and historically, deficiency in vitamin C (scurvy) led to gum disease.
However, specific scientific studies on Rugose Rose itself and its direct effects on gum health are limited. Most of the evidence is extrapolated from general knowledge about rose hips and vitamin C. There are a few in vitro and animal studies indicating that extracts from Rosa rugosa may have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically benefit gum health, but human clinical data are lacking.
In summary, the use of Rugose Rose to support the gums is rooted in traditional medicine and is largely based on its vitamin C content and antioxidant qualities, but robust scientific validation specifically for gum health is lacking.
