Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sapindus mukorossi, commonly known as soapnut or reetha, has a longstanding history in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. Its use for oral health, including supporting gum health, is primarily rooted in these traditions. In Ayurveda, the powdered fruit or bark has been used in tooth powders and herbal mouth rinses to clean teeth, freshen breath, and support healthy gums. The astringent and cleansing properties of its saponins are believed to help reduce plaque and maintain oral hygiene. However, while several in vitro studies have shown Sapindus mukorossi extracts possess antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens, direct clinical evidence for its effectiveness in supporting gum health in humans is lacking. Most claims are based on ethnobotanical use and traditional preparations rather than robust clinical trials. Therefore, the evidence is largely traditional, with a modest body of preliminary scientific research, but not enough to rate it higher. More rigorous human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy for gum health.
