Rating (out of 5): 2

Styrax balsam, also known as benzoin resin, has a long history of traditional use in oral care, particularly for supporting gum health. In various cultures, benzoin resin has been used as a component in tinctures, balms, and mouthwashes due to its aromatic and purported antiseptic properties. Historical herbal medicine texts cite its application for soothing inflamed tissues and as a remedy for mouth ulcers and gum irritation. The resin's inclusion in some old-fashioned tooth powders and mouth rinses is well-documented, and it was valued for both its fragrance and its perceived protective qualities for the mucous membranes of the mouth.

However, robust scientific evidence validating Styrax balsam's effectiveness specifically for gum health is limited. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated mild antimicrobial activity against certain oral pathogens, but clinical trials assessing its efficacy for conditions such as gingivitis or periodontal disease are lacking. Modern dental formulations rarely include Styrax balsam for gum support, and its use today is mostly rooted in tradition rather than contemporary evidence-based practice. Therefore, while its use is justified by traditional practice, scientific validation remains minimal.
