Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Yerba Mansa (Anemopsis californica) has been traditionally used in Native American and Western herbalism to support oral health, including the gums. Historical records indicate its use by indigenous peoples of the Southwestern United States for treating mouth sores, gum inflammation, and sore throats, often as a poultice, mouthwash, or decoction. The plant contains compounds such as tannins and essential oils, which are believed to have mild antimicrobial and astringent properties. These qualities may help reduce oral bacteria and inflammation, which are common factors in gum disease. However, while these traditional uses are well documented in ethnobotanical literature, there is a lack of robust scientific studies specifically validating Yerba Mansa’s efficacy for gum health in humans. Some in vitro research points to antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings have not been directly correlated with improved gum health in clinical trials. Therefore, Yerba Mansa’s use for supporting the gums is primarily justified by traditional practice, not by strong scientific validation.
