Evidence supporting the use of: Zinc carnosine
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Zinc carnosine is a chelated compound of zinc and L-carnosine, originally developed for gastrointestinal mucosal protection. However, there is emerging scientific evidence supporting its use in oral health and gum (periodontal) support. Several studies have found that zinc carnosine can promote the healing of oral mucosal lesions, reduce inflammation, and enhance tissue repair. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2017 showed that a zinc carnosine mouthwash improved periodontal healing after scaling and root planing in patients with chronic periodontitis. The proposed mechanisms include zinc’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, as well as carnosine’s antioxidative and tissue-protective effects.
Additionally, zinc is an essential mineral for maintaining oral health, and deficiencies have been linked to periodontal disease. Clinical studies, though still limited in size and scope, indicate that zinc carnosine supplementation may reduce gingival inflammation and promote regeneration of gum tissue. There is not yet consensus or large-scale clinical data, but the available literature does suggest a legitimate role for zinc carnosine in supporting gum health.
In summary, while zinc carnosine is not a mainstream periodontal therapy, scientific studies provide a moderate level of evidence that it can support gum tissue health, primarily via anti-inflammatory and mucosal protective actions.
