Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Zinc L-Carnosine is a chelated compound of zinc and the dipeptide L-carnosine, primarily used for gastrointestinal mucosal support. However, there is emerging scientific evidence suggesting a possible benefit for oral health, particularly in supporting gum (periodontal) health. Several in vitro and small clinical studies have investigated the effects of Zinc L-Carnosine on oral tissues. The rationale is based on zinc’s known roles in tissue repair, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial actions, and carnosine’s antioxidant properties.

A 2011 study published in the Journal of Periodontology found that a mouthwash containing Zinc L-Carnosine reduced clinical indicators of gingivitis in a small group of participants over several weeks. Other research indicates Zinc L-Carnosine can promote the healing of oral mucosal lesions and may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the oral cavity. The mechanism is thought to involve local delivery of zinc ions and carnosine, which together may promote tissue repair and inhibit the growth of bacteria implicated in gum disease.

However, large-scale, long-term clinical trials are lacking, and the evidence base is still preliminary. Most data are derived from small, short-term studies or extrapolated from gastrointestinal use. The ingredient is not yet a standard treatment in periodontology, but the available scientific studies provide some support for its role in gum health, warranting a moderate evidence rating.
