Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Amino acid chelates are minerals bound to amino acids, which can enhance the absorption of minerals such as zinc, iron, copper, and magnesium. These minerals are known to play important roles in hair health. For example, zinc deficiency has been associated with hair loss, and iron is crucial for hair follicle function. The chelation process can improve the bioavailability of these minerals, potentially making supplementation more effective compared to non-chelated forms. Several small studies and reviews have found that supplementation with chelated forms of minerals can improve serum levels in individuals with deficiencies. However, direct clinical evidence that amino acid chelates themselves (rather than the minerals they contain) specifically improve hair growth or reduce hair loss is limited. Most research supports the idea that correcting underlying mineral deficiencies improves hair health, rather than chelation alone being uniquely beneficial for the hair. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale for using mineral chelates to support hair health (mainly through better absorption of essential minerals), high-quality, direct evidence for their effectiveness specifically for hair is modest. The current evidence supports use in people with deficiencies, but not as a universal solution for hair concerns.
