Evidence supporting the use of: Argan tree
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
The use of Argan tree (Argania spinosa) oil for supporting hair health has a basis in both traditional practices and scientific research, though the quality of evidence is moderate. Traditionally, argan oil has been used in Morocco for centuries to condition and improve the appearance of hair. Scientifically, argan oil is rich in essential fatty acids (mainly oleic and linoleic acid), vitamin E (tocopherols), and polyphenols, all of which are known to have moisturizing and antioxidant properties. These constituents can help reduce hair dryness, increase shine, and protect hair from oxidative damage and environmental stressors.
Several in vitro and ex vivo studies suggest that argan oil may reduce protein loss from hair when used as a pre- or post-wash treatment, potentially improving hair strength and smoothness. There is also evidence that the oil improves combability and reduces frizz due to its emollient effects. However, clinical trials in humans are limited, with most available data coming from small studies or studies evaluating blends of different oils. While there is scientific support for argan oil’s cosmetic benefits for hair, evidence for its effects on hair growth, scalp health, or as a treatment for hair loss is insufficient.
In summary, argan oil’s use for supporting hair health is justified by its nutrient composition and some laboratory and small-scale human studies, but high-quality clinical trials are lacking. Its main benefits are related to hair conditioning, moisture retention, and protection from damage.
