Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Collagen is frequently marketed as a supplement to support hair health, primarily based on its role as a structural protein in connective tissues throughout the body, including the skin and scalp. Scientifically, collagen itself does not directly compose hair; hair is made primarily of keratin, a different protein. However, the rationale for collagen supplementation is that it provides amino acids (notably proline and glycine) that are necessary for keratin production. Some small clinical studies and in vitro research have suggested that collagen peptides may improve skin elasticity and hydration, which could theoretically create a healthier environment for hair growth. There is also some preliminary evidence that collagen supplementation may reduce hair breakage and improve hair thickness, but these findings are not consistent or robust across studies. Most available research focuses on skin health rather than direct hair growth or quality, and well-controlled, large-scale clinical trials evaluating collagen’s effect on hair specifically are lacking. Therefore, while there is some scientific plausibility and early evidence, the direct support for collagen supplementation as a means to improve hair health remains limited and inconclusive.
