Evidence supporting the use of: DL-Methionine
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
DL-Methionine is an essential amino acid and a precursor to other sulfur-containing compounds, including cysteine and taurine. Its role in supporting the hair body system is based on its involvement in the synthesis of keratin, the primary structural protein in hair. Methionine provides sulfur, which is crucial for the cross-linking of keratin fibers, thereby influencing hair strength and structure. Some scientific studies indicate that deficiencies in methionine or related sulfur amino acids may contribute to poor hair quality or hair loss. However, direct clinical evidence demonstrating that DL-methionine supplementation improves hair growth or prevents hair loss in healthy individuals is limited. Most studies supporting its use are either animal studies or small-scale human trials with mixed results. Additionally, DL-methionine is commonly included in formulations alongside other nutrients (such as biotin, zinc, and cysteine), making it difficult to isolate its specific effects. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some supportive evidence for using DL-methionine to maintain hair health, robust, large-scale clinical trials are lacking, and its benefit appears modest in the absence of a deficiency.
