Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Drynaria, particularly the rhizome of Drynaria fortunei, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries. Its traditional applications primarily focus on strengthening bones and tendons, but it has also been used in herbal formulas intended to address hair loss and promote hair growth, often under the TCM concept of "tonifying the kidney," which is believed to govern hair health. Historical texts and materia medica reference its inclusion in remedies for alopecia. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating Drynaria's effects on hair growth in humans are limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Drynaria may promote hair follicle activity and proliferation of dermal papilla cells, possibly due to its flavonoid content. However, these findings are preliminary and not yet substantiated by robust clinical trials in humans. Therefore, while there is a strong tradition of using Drynaria for supporting hair health within TCM, high-quality scientific validation remains limited at this time.
