Indian Gooseberry, also known as Phyllanthus emblica or amla, has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for supporting hair health. Traditional Ayurvedic texts recommend amla oil and powders for strengthening hair, promoting hair growth, and preventing premature graying. The fruit is considered a "rasayana," or rejuvenating substance, and is commonly included in hair tonics and herbal oils in India and other parts of South Asia.

Scientific studies on Indian Gooseberry's effects on hair are limited but growing. Laboratory and animal research suggest that amla extract has antioxidant properties and may promote hair growth by prolonging the anagen (growth) phase in hair follicles. Some studies have shown that topical application of amla oil or extract can increase hair density or reduce hair loss in animal models. The high vitamin C and polyphenol content of amla is proposed to contribute to these effects, as they may protect against oxidative stress, which is linked to hair aging and loss.

However, high-quality human clinical trials are lacking, and most evidence for amla's benefits for hair is anecdotal or based on traditional use. While laboratory data are promising, more rigorous human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and determine optimal usage for hair health.
