Evidence supporting the use of: Kelp (unspecified)
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Kelp, a type of seaweed, is traditionally used in various cultures to support hair health, primarily due to its high iodine content and rich mineral profile. Iodine is essential for proper thyroid function, which in turn can influence hair growth and health. Historically, people have associated kelp and other seaweeds with improvements in hair condition, thickness, and growth. However, scientific research directly linking kelp consumption or supplementation to improved hair health is limited and largely anecdotal.
Some indirect evidence connects iodine deficiency to hair loss, as hypothyroidism (often caused by insufficient iodine) can lead to thinning hair. Thus, kelp could theoretically support hair health in individuals with iodine deficiency. Yet, for those with adequate iodine intake, there is no strong evidence that additional kelp provides further benefit for hair. Excessive iodine intake can actually disrupt thyroid function and potentially worsen hair loss.
Overall, while the use of kelp for hair health has traditional roots and some plausible biological mechanisms, current scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for this purpose is weak. Most claims are not substantiated by clinical trials or robust human studies. Therefore, the evidence for kelp’s use in supporting the hair body system rates low.
