Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Nutritional yeast is sometimes promoted as beneficial for hair health due to its rich nutrient profile, particularly its high content of B vitamins (notably biotin), protein, and trace minerals such as zinc and selenium. These nutrients are known to play roles in normal hair growth and health. There is scientific evidence that deficiencies in biotin, zinc, and some B vitamins can lead to hair thinning or loss; thus, supplementation in deficient individuals can be beneficial for hair. However, there is limited direct research specifically examining the effects of nutritional yeast itself on hair health in the general population.

Most of the scientific support comes from the known roles of the nutrients contained in nutritional yeast, rather than from clinical trials or studies involving nutritional yeast as a supplement for hair. For example, biotin supplementation has been shown to improve hair growth in people with biotin deficiency, but evidence for benefit in those with adequate biotin status is lacking. Similarly, zinc and selenium deficiencies can cause hair loss, but supplementation only helps if there is a deficiency. Therefore, while nutritional yeast can be a useful source of these nutrients, especially for people following plant-based diets, the evidence for its direct impact on hair health is limited. The overall evidence rating is moderate-to-low (2/5), based on extrapolated nutrient data rather than direct clinical trials.
