Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA found in fish oil, have been investigated for their potential benefits on hair health. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that omega-3s may contribute to hair growth and scalp health, largely due to their anti-inflammatory properties and role in cell membrane function. Several small clinical studies and animal models have indicated that supplementation with omega-3s can reduce hair thinning, improve hair density, and decrease hair loss, particularly when combined with other nutrients such as antioxidants or omega-6 fatty acids. For instance, a 2015 randomized controlled trial found that women taking a supplement containing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, along with antioxidants, saw improvements in hair density and reduced telogen (resting phase) proportion after six months. However, the evidence is not robust, as most studies are small, have methodological limitations, and often use combination supplements rather than isolated omega-3s. There is a plausible biological rationale—omega-3s may help reduce scalp inflammation and support follicle function—but more high-quality research is needed to define the effect size and optimal dosing. In summary, while there is some scientific validation for using omega-3s to support hair health, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is moderate to low.
