Evidence supporting the use of: Omega-3 fatty acid triglycerides
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in triglyceride form in fish oil and some plant oils, have been studied for their impact on hair health. Several small-scale clinical studies and observational research suggest that omega-3s may help support hair growth and reduce hair loss, primarily due to their anti-inflammatory properties and role in maintaining cell membrane integrity. Omega-3s may nourish hair follicles, promote circulation in the scalp, and reduce inflammation that can contribute to hair shedding or poor growth. A 2015 randomized controlled trial found that women who took a supplement containing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids experienced increased hair density and reduced telogen (resting phase) percentage in hair follicles, compared to placebo. However, these studies often combine omega-3s with other nutrients like antioxidants, making it difficult to isolate their specific effect. Systematic reviews indicate that while there is a plausible biological mechanism and some positive findings, the overall evidence remains limited, with more large-scale, well-controlled trials needed. Traditionally, omega-3s haven’t been widely used specifically for hair, but their general reputation for supporting skin and cellular health has led to their inclusion in hair-support supplements. In summary, there is some early scientific evidence supporting their use for hair health, but it is not robust or conclusive.
